About

Background World

Background World is an AI game lab. We make games you could only make with AI.

We call them live-generated games, or live-gen for short. The game is made while you play it, so it answers back and doesn't run out. In The Big Board, you command an army with your voice, and the enemy AI hears every order you give.

What we're trying to do

Push play forward. The Wii remote didn't make games prettier. It changed what people did with their hands, and people who had never held a controller started playing. AI is that kind of shift. We want to find the new kinds of play it opens up, and bring back old kinds that nobody could make enough of.

So we test fast, in public, on the web. Every second Thursday at 6pm Eastern we release a new game. We call each one a Game Drop, numbered in order. Each one plays in your browser, free to start. The ones that find players grow. The ones that don't go into the vault for a while. We write about all of it, the misses included, in the journal.
