AI and safety
How our games use AI
Background World makes games that are generated while you play. In a live run, an AI model writes the scenes, characters, events and replies as you go, so no two runs are the same. We use Claude models from Anthropic for this.
Offline play uses content we made ahead of time. Some of it was also made with AI, then chosen and edited by us.
When you're in a live run, you are interacting with AI, not with a person.
What it can get wrong
- Everything the game generates is fiction, even when it uses real places, dates or data.
- It can be inaccurate, contradict itself, or come out strange.
- Despite our filters, it can occasionally produce something offensive or inappropriate.
Don't treat anything a game generates as fact, news or advice.
What we do to keep it safe
- Content rules. Our games are told never to produce sexual content, hate, harassment, self-harm content, or real people as characters, and never to put words in real people's mouths.
- Limited input. Where you can type, inputs are short, and we check them before they reach the AI.
- Checks on output. The AI provider's own safety systems apply, and we review flagged and reported runs.
- Limits. Each run has a cost and length cap, and each account has a rate limit.
- A kill switch. We can switch live generation off for any game at any moment. Offline play keeps working.
- Records. We keep live run text for 90 days so we can review reports and fix problems. See our privacy policy.
Report something
If a game produces something harmful, offensive, or that seems to be about a real person, email support@bgworldlab.com with the game, the time and a screenshot if you can. We read every report within 2 business days, and sooner when someone could be harmed. If we confirm a problem, we fix the filter and return the run you used.
Age
Our games are for players aged 13 and over. They contain no romance or sexual content, and no open-ended chat with an ongoing AI character.
Sharing what you make
You're welcome to share screenshots and clips. Please don't present AI-generated content as real events or real statements by real people.
